Improving Reproductive Health and Pregnancy for People with Multiple Sclerosis

Mental Health

The uncertainty inherent in the MS diagnosis coupled with pregnancy can be challenging, as uncertainty may impact your mood, and may be associated with feelings of depression or anxiety. Many patients may find themselves struggling with mental health during family planning and pregnancy, and especially postpartum, as they contend with an increased risk for a relapse while navigating life as a new parent. In fact, patients with MS are at increased risk for postpartum depression. Your provider should screen for mental health changes. Mental health and social support are likely to be helpful as you navigate pregnancy and MS and know that you are not alone. Please discuss mental health further with your neurologist and other healthcare providers.
