Breastfeeding
Patients can safely breastfeed postpartum and there is some evidence that breastfeeding can be protective against postpartum relapses. See Medications for information on safety of medications in breastfeeding. Generally, though the data on DMT safety in breastfeeding is limited, self-injectables and monoclonal antibody medications can be restarted while breastfeeding. If not breastfeeding, most medications can be restarted within 2-4 weeks postpartum. Methylprednisolone is safe during breastfeeding. You may be referred to a lactation consultant for support if needed.
Postpartum Depression
Patients with MS are more likely to develop postpartum depression. SeeĀ Mental Health.
Imaging
Imaging should be considered postpartum to establish a new baseline. IV gadolinium is safe during breastfeeding.
